It started in Riviera Beach when an employee in the 35,000-resident city's police department opened an email containing a piece of malware.  No precautions were taken before opening the mail and this virus quickly spread throughout the municipal government. The impacts were disabling the city's official website; municipal employees' emails, voice-over-internet-protocol phones, and the local water utility's ability accept or receive online payments.

Microsoft Corp. recently announced the end of support for Windows 7 operating system.  This could be misconstrued as an irrelevant news update owing to lack of awareness on what it could impact.  Currently Windows 7 is a rampantly used Operating System by billions of customers as well as several businesses across the world.  This system regularly receives updates and support from Microsoft.  Until now, not much attention would have been given to such updates.

What is the difference?

For the very first time in the history of Microsoft, Bill Gates, the founder of the world's giant software conglomerate is no longer its major shareholder. In the past two days, Mr. Gates has sold almost 8 million shares of Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500), bringing down his total to roughly 330 million which puts him behind Microsoft's former CEO Steve Ballmer who owns 333 million shares.

Microsoft Silverlight is the latest of the legacy applications that will be discontinued. The end of support data has been announced as 5^th October 2021. That is, nearly two years from now. The core reasons for this are believed to be vulnerabilities in media plugins along with consecutive cyber attacks (Silverlight was a victim in 2014). Microsoft has thus initiated the need for developers to find a newer and better alternative to Silverlight.

From June 2020, Google will restrict the ability for less secure apps (LSAs) to access G Suite account data. Theseare third party applicationsthat can access Google accounts with only a username and password. Examples of these apps are Google calendars, contacts in addition to Microsoft Outlook. Gmail in specific had been accessed until now via protocols such as CalDAV, CardDAV, IMAP, and Exchange ActiveSync (Google Sync).
